John Woods

President and CEO


John J. Woods is in his 33rd year of the financial consulting business, and spent the last twenty six years as Executive Director of Oppenheimer and Company. Prior to that, John was Vice President at Lehman Brothers. He is President of Friends of Chastain Park Foundation, serves on the Board of 643 Baseball Foundation, serves on the football committee of NYO – where he coached for 17 years, and is the Chairman of Walton High School Touchdown Club. John is currently the owner of the Chattanooga Lookouts and also sits on the board of three companies.

John attended Tennessee Tech where he was a member of the football team. He attended the Wharton Executive School of Business and studied for his CIMA. John has bought, started, and sold many businesses. John is also the former Owner of 7 Speed and Agility Facilities, owned Sports A Rama and Honeycutt Sports. 

John is the father to four boys and husband to Janelle Blaylock Woods. His two oldest sons played football for Kentucky, his 19 year old son is a Freshman football player for Georgia, and he has a 14 year old son currently attending Walton High School, who plays football and 643 baseball.

Jim Woods

Jim joined Southport Capital in 2008 and serves as the Senior Portfolio Manager at Southport Capital. His primary focus is helping small to medium sized business more effectively manage their retirement benefit accounts.

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jim came to Atlanta to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he played varsity football for four years and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management.

The first four years of his business career was spent in the insurance industry with Moye Financial Associates. He started his Wall Street career at Merrill Lynch in 1981. Jim has had an extensive career of money management at Bear Stearns, Shearson Lehman Brothers, and Robinson-Humphrey Co., with his last nineteen years being spent at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, before joining Southport in 2008.

Jim and his wife Terri are now empty nesters in Marietta, Georgia, having successfully raised an attorney and two USMC officers.

Julie Jones, FPQP™



Julie is a Financial Planner and handles portfolio administration in the Atlanta branch of Southport Capital. She joined the firm in 2016, coming from Oppenheimer & Co where she was a Senior Client Services Associate for 5 years. She began her financial career in 1979 at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb as a Registered Sales Assistant. Prior to joining Oppenheimer, she employed her knowledge and skill as a certified Consultant Group Analyst at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, working with high net worth clients. A native Californian, Julie attended Grossmont College and San Diego State where she obtained her Associate’s degree in Radio and Television Production. After relocating to the Atlanta area, she continued her education at Kennesaw State University where she studied Secondary Math and Science Education. She holds her General Securities Representative License (Series 7), the Uniform Securities Agent State Exam (Series 63), Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam (Series 66), Insurance/Annuity License and Variable Annuity Licenses. She is currently enrolled in a study program working toward a CFP designation. She’s been married 22 years and has 2 adult sons. She unwinds in the evenings and weekends by either riding motorcycles with her husband and friends or by creating whimsical, yet functional pottery that can be found in galleries in Georgia and Kentucky. She also is active in her church and church choir.

Iris Israel

Client Services


lris has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. lris began her career with Dean Witter Reynolds in Tampa, Florida and then with Paine Webber in Mission Viejo, California where she worked with a top Municipal Bond trader. Most recently, she was a Senior Financial Associate at Oppenheimer & Co. in Atlanta, Georgia for 23 years. She has extensive Client Service relationship experience and the necessary skills for Compliance.

Iris is married to John Israel, and they have 2 grown sons with families in Utah and San Diego. lris studied Marine Science at Temple University and was planning for a career in that industry, but life took her in another direction. She is currently active in Equine and Canine Rescue with Save the Horses and Golden Rescue of Atlanta, she also enjoys cooking, dancing and the beach.

Ryan Arasi

Client Services


Ryan is an Administrative Assistant at the Atlanta branch of Southport Capital. He’s been with the firm since 2017.

A native of Atlanta, he graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2008 with a degree in International Relations. He is currently working towards his CFP designation. 



Sharon Brazeal

Administrative Assistant 


Sharon Brazeal comes to Southport Capital with over 30 years of Executive Administration and Office Management experience.  She has worked with such companies as Turner Broadcasting and Nortel Network.  She spent 9 years at Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE) in roles such as supporting the CEO and project coordinator on an 85 million building renovation project.
